Fiber artist
My favorite artistic technique is weaving, but I don’t like just weaving with fabric. I like to explore mixing various alternative and unusual materials such as plastic, metal wire, fishline, and beads in my weaving. For every new weaving piece, I try to do something original. If I just used the same technique or thread over and over again, I’ll get bored. I love to try new things to make me re-inspired.
When I use different materials, I think about what the materials represent and what they could mean. For example, in an embroidery self-portrait I’m working on, I’m using beads because, to me, beads are connected to childhood. In a piece I made of a urinal, I used colorful plastic to combat the blandness of masculinity: Why can’t a urinal be colorful like feminine things?
